District presents new instructional guide focused on signature teaching practices

The Pajaro Valley Unified School District presented a new instructional guide Tuesday intended to codify "signature practices" for district instruction and anchor professional development.

"We will focus this year on the gradual release model and teacher clarity — using learning intentions and success criteria," Assistant Superintendent Claudia Mones said. She told trustees the guide emerged from teacher-led visionary network meetings and will be updated each year as teachers contribute materials and feedback.

Trustees asked how the guide would be used in day-to-day instruction and how the district would monitor results, particularly for English learners. Mones and other administrators said the guide will be paired with site-level professional learning communities, quarterly data conversations and district benchmarks (three times per year) so principals and teachers can track formative and summative progress.

Administrators also said the guide will include QR codes and digital folders to make resources accessible, and they plan to cultivate site-level "super-users" who will mentor colleagues and help sustain practices. A group of 40 students participated in earlier work to shape the guide, Mones said, and the district ran drafts through parent advisory committees.

The board thanked staff for the work and asked for future updates on implementation and evidence of classroom impact.
