The Montgomery City Council approved staff’s request to proceed with the concept and next steps to convert Macauan Street to a permanent northbound one‑way as the first phase of a broader downtown streetscape project.
Chris, a city project manager, told council the packet (page 72) shows the proposed layout for the phase that includes Macauan (northbound), angled parking on the east side, new sidewalks, planting strips and pedestrian lighting. "The ultimate ask for tonight is we're trying to give you the full picture of the Macauan project with the ask of approval to make Macauan a one‑way northbound street," Chris said.
Staff said the immediate action approved by council was conceptual approval to proceed and to put the phase out to bid in May, with construction likely in the fall. Council discussed parking impacts, parade routing and pedestrian improvements; staff said the plan was designed to add a small number of parking spaces and to make the street more walkable.
The motion to accept item number 14 carried after a motion by Miss Fox and a second by Mr. Olsen; Miss Langley recorded a nay on the voice vote. Staff will return with final design details and a construction schedule as the project advances through the bidding process.
