Trustees reject broad calendar change but approve moving December organizational meeting

Trustees debated a proposal to shift five upcoming regular board meetings from Wednesday to Thursday and faced repeated public objections about Brown Act notice and community access.

"Such a change requires considerable staff time and coordination," said a public commenter opposing changes, citing the Brown Act and the need for predictable scheduling. Several public speakers urged retaining the established meeting day to preserve transparency and public participation.

Trustee Medina, who said a work conflict would prevent attendance on proposed new dates, argued the change would disenfranchise constituents who rely on that trustee's presence: "If I'm not here, we're not going to have people defending our labor, our students," she said.

After extended discussion and a first motion to move five meetings, the board voted; the motion failed. Trustees then proposed a narrower motion to move just the December 10 organizational meeting to December 11 so the full board could attend the leadership and committee assignments; that motion passed by roll call.

Board leadership and staff said any schedule change must be specific (day and time) so notices and bylaws can be updated; several trustees suggested using a survey or other process to identify meeting days that work for a majority before making permanent changes.

The board’s decision leaves most upcoming meetings on their regular schedule but changes the December organizational date to Dec. 11.
