Jones County assessors approve homestead and motor-vehicle appeals, table two land‑use applications

The Jones County Board of Assessors on April 2 approved a set of routine exemptions and appeals and tabled two applications that did not meet minimum acreage requirements.

Staff recommended approval of 78 homestead exemptions and one veteran homestead application (79 total); the board moved, seconded and approved the recommendation. Staff also recommended approval of four assessment change orders (ACOs) and 23 motor‑vehicle appeals; those recommendations were approved.

On land‑use applications, staff said the office received 60 “coup” applications (term as transcribed); two properties—J25‑0000‑012A and J53‑0000‑308—were below the minimum acreage after subtracting two acres for a home and were asked to submit a land‑use plan. Staff recommended tabling those two applications and approving the remaining 58; two board members indicated they would abstain on the tabling vote and the board moved to table the two properties and approve the remainder.

Staff also reported that the mobile‑home appeal period closed with seven appeals; one appeal was reviewed and approved at the meeting and the remaining six will be inspected in the coming week. Office staff said 185 “coven flip” applications were received since January 5, of which 81 have been processed, 58 were submitted at this meeting and 46 are scheduled for the May 7 meeting.

The board was also advised that Trailer Business Services will begin handling business personal property returns and that technical appraisal services remain in a final review phase to prepare values for printing by June 1; 2026 assessment notices are scheduled to mail by June 15.
