"We received 16 submissions initially and the subcommittee selected the top 14 for review," Sandra Agalar said, summarizing the subcommittees recommendations.
During public and commissioner review, multiple members objected that one submission resembled advertising because it included product containers and brand text. Staff said their subcommittee planned to remove advertising text but commissioners argued the presence of trademarked packaging and names created an inappropriate precedent.
Chair Carol Rogers moved to approve all recommended boxes except the Bronners design and to require removal of brand names from other submissions. "I would like to exclude this Dr. Bronner's mural," she said during discussion; a second supported the motion and commissioners debated whether to ask the artist to rework the piece or open the location to the next call. Staff advised that placing a reworked piece would require inclusion in the next call rather than ad-hoc selection for fairness in the RFQ/RFP process.
After discussion the commission voted to approve the set with the stated conditions; meeting minutes record a final approval after technical confirmation of votes. The Bronners location will be held open for a future call for submissions; staff will ensure brand text is removed from approved designs before installation.
What happens next: staff will communicate required design edits to the approved artists, reopen the excluded location in a future solicitation, and coordinate installation timelines and any additional mockups the commission requested.
