The Torrance Unified School District board covered a range of business at its Dec. 1 meeting, including reports from students and the Torrance Education Foundation, a public hearing on statutory facilities fees (no public comment), a motion to delegate investment authority for proceeds from a prior property exchange, and approval of multiple governance and consent items.
Education Foundation: Pat Fury, president of the Torrance Education Foundation, said the foundation is conducting its annual campaign and preparing for the May 2 Celebrate Education dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel. Fury said the Skechers Walk raised about $194,000 this year and the foundation delivered roughly $214,000 to schools after bonuses; he named top-performing campuses and walker counts.
Facilities fees hearing: The board opened a duly noticed public hearing on the district's statutory school facilities fees and the five-year report for fiscal years 2019'20 through 2023'24 in compliance with Government Code provisions; staff reported no written or in-person comments and the board closed the hearing and later adopted the related resolution.
Investment delegation: The board moved item 14.4 forward to accommodate outside counsel and approved a request to delegate authority to invest proceeds from the previously approved Harmony Court property exchange into a three-year deed-of-trust investment portfolio; outside counsel Andreas Cheles attended to advise on the transaction.
Consent and governance actions: The board waived first reading and approved updates to board policies and bylaws (September 2024 revisions), approved appointments to district and community committees for 2025, and approved the consent calendar (with two pulled items handled individually). Trustees also recognized classified employee service anniversaries and welcomed newly sworn board member Dave Ziggle Bom.
Votes at a glance: delegation to invest Harmony Court proceeds (approved); positive certification of first interim report 2024'25 (approved); adoption of statutory school facilities fees report/resolution (approved); waiver and approval of bylaws updates (approved); committee appointments (approved); consent calendar (approved, except for pulled items 17.2 and 19.4 which were addressed separately).
