Apple Valley Unified spotlights dozens of student achievements at board meeting

Students from across Apple Valley Unified were celebrated for Skills USA wins, civic engagement, arts and CTE accomplishments; outgoing and incoming ASB leaders from multiple high schools addressed the board and received recognition.
Apple Valley Unified School District recognized students from multiple campuses for academic, technical and extracurricular achievements during its May meeting.
Dozens of students were called to the front of the meeting room for certificates and photographs. High Desert Premier Academy student representatives highlighted Mental Health Awareness Month activities; Granite Hills ASB president Hannah Forier outlined recent campus events and theater successes; and ASB leaders Jillian Rodriguez, Eden Piolo and Ephrain “Effie” Avila were introduced as outgoing and incoming student leaders.
The district honored a wide range of accomplishments. Skills USA competitors were lauded, including state qualifiers and medalists in areas such as health-care skills, CNC programming, medical assisting, mechatronics and welding. Matthew Lurley was recognized as an elected state officer. The board also presented state-seal-of-civic-engagement recognitions (including Valerie Diaz), scholarships, English-language-learner awards and county-level science-fair honors.
Career-technical education successes were emphasized: teams and individuals received awards in welding, automotive, culinary and cyber-security competitions, and several career-pathway students will advance to regional and national contests. The district noted students will travel to Atlanta for national Skills USA events.
Board members and the superintendent praised staff-led programs and community partners that support CTE and extracurricular achievement. Superintendent Nelson and trustees said these recognitions underscore district priorities in hands-on learning and student leadership.
The meeting concluded the recognition block with photos and a short recess before regular business continued.
