Susan Dew, a Middletown resident, told the Common Council the city’s annual spring cleanup will be held Saturday, April 18 at Eerie Way Park at the skating rink. She described the indoor rink as a convenient new venue and encouraged residents, families and newcomers to register online or simply show up that day to receive a shirt and cleanup gear.
The announcement mattered to council members because the cleanup is a recurring volunteer event that the city coordinates with multiple departments. "What happened to me is something that I don't want to happen to anybody else," Dew said, recounting how seeing litter on city streets led her to help start the cleanup more than a decade ago. She said the event began in about 2011 and has grown each year.
City Clerk (unnamed) told the council signups will be posted on the city website, likely early next week, and thanked the Department of Public Works, Recreation, Parks, Community Development and the treasurer's office for supporting the event. Alderman Massie clarified there is a separate citywide spring cleanup week beginning April 13 (by ward) with an electric drop‑off day and instructions to put materials out the Sunday before collection week.
The council did not take formal action on the announcement; the clerk and staff will post registration details and logistics to the city website ahead of the April 18 event.
