Parks staff highlight new dugout roofs, scoreboards and asphalt parking at Continental Sports Complex

A parks staff member told the Flagstaff Parks and Recreation Commission on March 16 that crews used deferred maintenance funding and in‑house labor to complete several projects at Continental Sports Complex and other sites.
The staff member said crews welded steel frames for new dugout roofs, repainted dugouts and the concession/announcers’ building, and hand‑built a new staircase to reach the upper level of the announcer’s booth. "They took a lot of pride in this work," the staff member said.
Staff also reported replacing a dirt parking area north of Thorp Park off Aztec with asphalt to reduce dust and curb after‑hours driving and vandalism. The projects, the staff member said, reduced contractor costs by relying on city crews and used deferred maintenance funds.
New electronic scoreboards bearing the Flagstaff Little League logo were installed at Continental and other fields; staff said the replacement was ordered together and looks consistent across sites. Gino, the parks lead who provided talking points but was not present at the meeting, provided additional project details, staff said.
Commissioners asked about paint sourcing and colors for park structures, and staff explained the city uses mixed or recycled paint in bulk, which can limit exact color matching. On irrigation and water, staff said reclaimed water is already allocated to existing customers and the system can be interrupted for a few days if plant operations require resetting.
The commission did not take formal action on any capital projects at the meeting. The minutes were approved earlier in the session by voice vote.
