Public health director schedules April 25 rabies clinic, cautions tick test data are limited

Shaw also reviewed the county’s annual tick testing letter from New York State, saying the results are a snapshot from selected locations and do not mean ticks are absent elsewhere in the county. He explained the field teams use a drag method — pulling a white cloth along trail sides — to collect ticks for testing.
Shaw told the committee the clinic typically serves "two to 300 individuals" and said county staff will offer phone registration for residents without computer access. He emphasized the tick data should be interpreted as limited surveillance, not comprehensive countywide sampling.
Committee members asked about testing methods and infectivity rates; Shaw indicated the state report compares local results with western region counties. No votes were taken on public health items due to the absence of a quorum; staff will follow up with details at the reconvened session.
