Teacher asks Alameda parks commission to pursue indoor roller‑skating option

At the start of the Dec. 11 Alameda Recreation & Park Commission meeting, public commenter Laurel Ordunia told commissioners she has been seeking an indoor roller‑skating venue in Alameda for about a year and asked staff to place the item on a future agenda.
“I wrote my notes so I would stay within three minutes,” Ordunia said. “My name is Laurel Ordunia. I’m a public high school teacher…there are no more roller skating rinks in the Bay Area. The closest rink is [in] San Mateo or Santa Cruz County.” She told the commission that indoor wooden floors and indoor skate wheels reduce injury risk compared with falls on concrete and that rinks typically charge $15–$20 for a two‑hour session.
Ordunia said she has discussed options with ARPD staff and with Alameda Point Gym but had not received a definitive response and asked to have the matter placed on the commission’s next agenda. Director Justin Long said staff would follow up with athletics staff and provide an update at the next staff report.
The commission did not take action on the request at the Dec. 11 meeting; Long said staff will coordinate with athletics and return with additional information.
