SSA Consultants presented a four-phase approach to a new superintendent search to the Special School District board: a preparation phase to gather stakeholder input and set the candidate profile, advertising and recruitment, candidate screening and interviews of finalists. "The final phase ... would be the finalist interviews," said Rudy Gomez, a partner at SSA; he told the board the firm typically completes searches in about 90 to 120 days.
Gomez described stakeholder engagement during the preparation phase including public meetings, surveys and interviews with a board search committee. He said the firm screens applicants, conducts reference checks and uses leadership instruments, and that finalists are brought for in-person visits before the board makes a selection.
Board members requested materials from the prior search and the SSA proposal. "We can definitely provide you that information," Gomez said when asked for the list of final candidates from the prior search; public commenter Kenny Davis said the last search drew "over 80 applicants" and expressed confidence in SSA's work.
No procurement action: the board did not and could not take a vote to approve SSA’s proposal because it lacked quorum. The chair said vendor selection will be placed on the agenda for the next meeting once members are confirmed and seated.
Next steps: SSA will await formal authorization at a future board meeting. The board asked staff and counsel to expedite steps to restore quorum so staffing and procurement actions can move forward.
