Lee County commissioners on April 7 directed staff to invite the four firms that submitted letters of interest for federal lobbying services to make in‑person presentations at the next board meeting, rather than immediately re‑soliciting the work.
County procurement staff explained the solicitation was posted on IonWave and the county received four submissions. Mary Tucker, director of procurement management, told commissioners that the county had not completed a formal scored selection committee because the board requested letters of interest with the intention that the board would pick from respondents.
Several commissioners said they preferred a longer solicitation and formal evaluation but also recognized time‑sensitive federal meetings in May tied to large grant opportunities. Commissioner Hammond suggested a hybrid approach: pick a firm to accompany commissioners for imminent May meetings if needed, while running a full procurement for a long‑term contract. The board instead agreed to the pragmatic middle step: ask the four respondents to present in person at the board’s next meeting so commissioners can evaluate them directly.
County staff said that if the board authorizes a firm after presentations, staff could negotiate and have a contract executed within about a week so the firm could be on board for May meetings. The board asked staff to set presentation expectations and report back.
