The Nevada City Planning Commission approved demolition of a severely deteriorated storage building at 405 Gracie Road, citing structural failure, proximity to large trees and the presence of public utility and right-of-way easements that likely prevent rebuilding in place.
Richard Baker, representing the applicant, said the insurance carrier pressured the owner to repair or remove the structure after prior fire damage and that much of the building was unsafe. Staff who visited the site described failing walls and roof, tree growth through the foundation and an attached secondary structure that will remain. Commissioners discussed the need to temporarily stabilize the neighboring attachment while demolition occurs; the approval included a condition that any stabilization be painted a neutral, non-ornamental color and that staff coordinate with the adjacent property owner so the temporary work is as unobtrusive as possible.
After discussion the commission moved to approve the demolition with the stabilization/painting condition; the motion passed unanimously.
