Fletcher collects recommendations for water and sewer commission amid interlocal uncertainty

The council heard applications from residents interested in representing Fletcher on the regional water and sewer commission amid questions about the status of the interlocal agreement with Henderson County.
Jacob Coner, a regional planner at Land of Sky Regional Council, discussed the importance of sewer connectivity to affordable housing and disclosed he is assisting the town with a grant for a decentralized wastewater system for failing septic systems near Fanning Bridge Road. Coner said the project could help connect homes with failing septic systems to sewer or repair failing systems.
Mitchart, a lifelong Fletcher resident, said he wants to participate in planning infrastructure to manage growth. Joanna Spendova, who works as an architect, said she has experience adjacent to utility and site work and could apply that perspective though she is not a water engineer.
Council noted County Commission Chair Bill Lashley has signaled potential uncertainty with the agreement and said the town will seek clarity before forwarding a recommendation. Councilors asked the applicants to return next week when the town expects to make a recommendation to county officials.
