City authorizes guaranteed maximum price agreements for two new public safety facilities

The Gainesville City Commission authorized early-release guaranteed maximum price (GMP) packages for site work on two public safety facilities at its April 16 meeting.
Facilities staff requested authorization to enter into a GMP early-release package with Ajax Building Company LLC in the amount of $2,030,207 for site work on Fire Station 3, which will replace the existing Safety City facility. Gary Cawthorn of the city’s facilities division explained the item covers site work and demolition; a later GMP will return for the vertical construction package.
The commission also approved a second GMP early-release package for the Southwest Public Safety Center and Fire Station 9 in the amount of $3,989,480. Interim Chief Operating Officer Brian Sandleton explained the larger site requires additional work including a roadway extension, extensive stormwater infrastructure and soil stabilization; the project will include a community room in the facility. Commissioners discussed whether site work could be combined with other nearby site projects to save cost but staff said the projects have separate funding and dedicated systems.
Both early-release GMPs were approved by voice vote without recorded opposition. Staff indicated the full GMPs for the building shells and vertical construction will return to the commission for final approval at a future meeting.
Next steps: Staff will finalize GMP documents and return with full GMP packages (estimated return dates discussed in the meeting: Fire Station 3 final GMP anticipated June 18; both full GMPs expected for later summer commission action).
