Teamsters Local 320 asks Baxter council to adopt union health plan for police sergeants to save city money

During the council's public comment period, Joshua Lur, president of Teamsters Local 320, told the Baxter City Council the union's health plan would be substantially less expensive than the city's current coverage for a family plan. "If the city were to do that, our total premium is $1,918 per month for dental, health care, and vision," Lur said, and he urged the council to consider switching the sergeants to the union plan as contract mediation approaches.
Lur said the city's current premium for a family plan is about $4,100 per month, with the city covering roughly 77 percent (about $3,216 per month), which he calculated at nearly $38,000 per person per year excluding dental and vision. He told the council the union's proposal—if the city covered 100 percent of the union premium—would reduce annual costs for one employee by about $16,000 and, for the sergeants group, could total nearly $48,000 in annual savings.
Lur offered to provide his speech and handout materials to staff and council members for review and said the proposal is intended to improve benefits while reducing city health-care costs.
The council did not take action on the proposal during the meeting; it was delivered as public comment ahead of the consent agenda and subsequent agenda items.
