Guest 'Mayor Poe' describes Sister Cities exchanges, Kyrgyz delegation visiting Gainesville

A visiting delegation and the Greater Gainesville International Center’s leader briefed the General Policy Committee on April 23 about Sister Cities exchanges and international programming.
The commission introduced "Mayor Poe," who discussed the Sister Cities program’s history (Gainesville joined in 1984), the organization's growth into the Greater Gainesville International Center and its four pillars: cultural celebration, exchanges, economic empowerment and direct services. He said the center served more than 300 people directly in 2025 and engaged more than 5,000 residents through events and outreach. He also introduced a visiting Open World delegation from Kyrgyzstan that has been meeting local leaders and learning about municipal governance and the IT economy.
Commissioners welcomed the delegation, asked about partnerships with UF and Santa Fe College and discussed how Sister Cities activity connects to local economic development, cultural programming and university research partnerships.
The mayor recessed the meeting briefly for a photo and gift exchange with the delegation.
