Gainesville commissioners refer $40,000 Cotton Club Museum emergency to city manager, ask for plan by May 10

Evelyn Fox, who the clerk identified as "President Fox," told the committee that six of eight air-conditioning units had failed and that the facility was running large industrial fans to keep spaces usable. Fox formally requested $40,000 to replace units and repair the system so the museum could host Florida’s Emancipation/Juneteenth events and resume rentals.
"This deficit threatens our ability to host essential annual programming," Fox said, adding that the organization lacks capital to complete the repairs immediately.
Commissioners discussed a range of responses: short-term fundraising, use of GCRA/CRA reserves for organizations inside program boundaries, prepaying rentals or sponsorships to provide cash quickly, and agency grants. Several commissioners expressed a preference to try private fundraising before moving city funds but acknowledged the museum’s deadline.
Commissioner Chestnut moved that the city manager work with the Cotton Club Museum to resolve the air-conditioning issue (up to $40,000) and to bring back a plan by May 10; the motion, amended to include staff assistance through the business-improvement grant process and outreach to other partners, passed unanimously with Commissioner Eastman absent. City Manager (interim) said he could bring options back to the commission and indicated a short turnaround (staff has completed similar emergency support in one to two weeks in recent cases).
What happens next: staff said it will coordinate with the Cotton Club board and partners, explore GCRA reserves and outside grants and return with a recommendation and implementation options for the May 7 commission meeting or the May 10 target date for on‑the‑ground repairs if private fundraising does not cover costs.
