The Fuquay‑Varina Town Board approved a construction contract on April 7 to install pedestrian safety improvements at four priority downtown locations, including rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs), upgraded crosswalks, signage, curbs and ADA work.
Engineering Director Matt Poland told the board the project targets crossings in front of town hall, near the Verina Station, downtown Fuquay near the square, and the crosswalk by Fuquay‑Varina High School. The project was re‑advertised after an initial solicitation; Holland’s Construction Services, Inc. was the lowest responsive and responsible bidder at $433,900.
The board also approved a budget amendment (BA26‑39/POA2614) in the amount of $150,000 to fund the project and authorized the town manager to execute the contract subject to attorney review. Poland said construction can begin once the contract is executed and noted the selected contractor is already mobilized in town doing other work.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about RRFB operation; Poland confirmed the units function like existing beacons in town (push‑button activated flashing beacons to warn motorists). The project is intended to improve pedestrian safety and ADA access at high‑use downtown crossings.
The contract award and funding amendment were approved by voice vote.
