LAREDO, March 18, 2026 — The City Committee for People with Disabilities received updates on several operational items, including school fingerprinting efforts, assistive-technology voucher options and community events tied to autism and disability awareness.
Committee members reported that the police department has begun offering fingerprinting at special-education events and at some campus activities; staff will confirm whether that service covers all schools or only specific events. Members asked staff to verify the program’s scope and scheduling before initiating a separate citywide effort.
Staff also summarized an assistive-technology voucher program that allows eligible residents to apply for devices such as tablets or phones through a certified application process; staff said applicants may face about a six-month wait and must provide proof of Texas residency and a certifying professional on the application.
Members promoted several upcoming events: a Walk for Down Syndrome scheduled for Saturday at Roberto Yano Track near San Martin School (10 a.m.; Zumba at 11; walk at 10:30) and Laredo Wellness Games on April 11, which organizers said will be an inclusive event with free registration for special-needs participants and an adaptive component. Committee members encouraged cross-promotion to avoid scheduling conflicts during the busy autism-awareness month in April.
A final public comment raised concerns about available ABA or comparable services for adults with autism; staff offered to provide a San Antonio-area resource and to share additional contacts. The committee adjourned after asking staff to follow up on event coordination and program confirmations.
