Fanwood officials report busy volunteer fire and rescue month; public works logged major leaf pickup

The Fanwood Borough Council received routine public safety, public works and library reports at its meeting.
Councilwoman Patricia Walsh presented Chief Piccola’s fire department report: the department responded to 27 calls in December, including a structural fire, several vehicle accidents and alarms. For the year the department recorded 306 emergency calls and 364 total calls including drills and events. Council members thanked the volunteer firefighters for their service.
The rescue squad captain reported 21 calls in December, nine insufficient‑crew calls, one second call request, and an average response time of 8 minutes 24 seconds; total response hours for the month were recorded at 117 minutes (as presented).
Public Works reported routine winter operations including deicing, snow removal and curbside pick‑up; staff said approximately 8,000 cubic yards of leaves were collected from borough‑owned properties during the most recent season. The department also assisted with a major sewer block on South Avenue and recorded overtime for snow operations.
The library reported 24 youth services events in December with 195 children and teens attending and 166 adults attending programs; six teen volunteers contributed a total of 288 hours during the year.
