Parent urges district to explain GPA calculation after early-graduation dispute

PERRIS, Calif. — During public comment at the Perris Union High School District Board meeting on Aug. 13, parent Sima Gonzalez asked trustees for a public explanation of how the district calculates grade-point averages and requested an immediate review after difficulties obtaining clear answers about her son's early-graduation pathway.
Gonzalez described weeks of back-and-forth among school contacts and county offices to obtain information she says should have been clear from the start. "A miscalculated GPA can directly impact a student college admissions scholarships and future opportunities," she said, asking the district to publish the GPA calculation method and to correct the equation if an error is found.
She provided the district with an Excel sheet and said she had conducted a statistical review comparing Perris Union's method with neighboring Riverside County districts and district policy (Board policy 6146.1). Gonzalez asked for better staff training so families receive consistent, accurate communication.
Board members did not take immediate action during public comment but the superintendent and staff were asked to review the concern and provide follow-up to the family, including a detailed breakdown of course weightings and GPA computations where available.
