Carlsbad Unified reorganizes board leadership; trustees elect Rollins president and Ward vice president

The Carlsbad Unified School District Board of Trustees completed its annual organizational business at the Dec. 18 meeting, swearing in newly elected trustees and filling officer roles for 2025.
Interim Superintendent Rick Schmidt administered the oath for new trustees, including Allison Amry and Laura Siosi, at the start of the meeting. After the Brown Act training and a brief recess, the board reconvened and conducted nominations and roll‑call elections for board leadership.
Trustee Rollins was elected board president in a 3–2 roll‑call vote after trustees debated whether to follow a multi‑year succession custom. Later, the board elected Trustee Ward as vice president after several rounds of nominations and a revote, the final tally recorded 3–2 in favor of Ward. The board approved Trustee Verth as clerk in a unanimous 5–0 vote.
The board also appointed Interim Superintendent Rick Schmidt to serve as secretary to the Board of Trustees (motion approved 5–0). Other organizational business included approval of authorized signatures and adoption of the 2025 meeting calendar, with a change moving the Feb. 19 meeting to Feb. 12.
The organizational actions were recorded by the board clerk during roll‑call votes and will take effect for the 2025 calendar year. The board said appointments are intended to provide continuity as the district conducts an upcoming superintendent search.
