The Apple Valley Unified School District board voted March 6 to adopt resolutions reducing certificated and classified services and approved related personnel actions, actions the superintendent said were prompted by budget realities laid out earlier in the meeting.
Trustees voted to adopt Resolution 2425.19 (reduction/discontinuance of certificated services) and Resolution 2425.20 (reduction/discontinuance of classified services). The roll call on the certificated reduction resulted in a 3–2 vote; Trustees Longshore and Tucker recorded “no” votes while the motion carried. The board then approved a set of certificated and classified personnel actions, including notices and recommended non‑reelection for specific probationary certificated employees, which staff said will be carried out in accordance with law.
During discussion prior to the vote, Trustee Longshore expressed concern about cutting positions that have direct instructional impact—specifically reading interventionists—and urged the board to protect early‑intervention literacy supports. The board discussed timelines and legal notice requirements for any non‑reelection or reduction in force and moved some items through consent where legally appropriate.
Board members also approved a memorandum of understanding with CSEA Chapter 828 addressing transfer processes through Dec. 31, 2025, and reported closed‑session actions that included approving non‑reelection notices for three certificated probationary employees (employee numbers read into the record) and denying a pending claim, per the clerk’s closed‑session report.
The motions were framed by budget presentations that preceded the votes; trustees and union leaders in public comment linked personnel reductions to the district’s fiscal position. The board indicated staff will follow required legal notice processes and that additional labor negotiations remain ongoing.
