Subcommittee approves strike-all amendment to RV‑park ejectment ‘squatters’ bill unanimously

The Labor, Commerce and Industry subcommittee unanimously approved a strike-all amendment to Senate Bill S718, replacing its text with House Bill H3387’s more comprehensive process for removing unlawful residential occupants commonly referred to as squatters.
Under the substituted language, property owners may file a verified petition with the county magistrate’s clerk to seek immediate removal of occupants if the petitioner shows proof of ownership, that the property is a residential dwelling not open to the public, the occupants are neither tenants nor immediate family, and no pending litigation exists regarding the property. The bill codifies an expedited removal procedure when sufficient evidence of unlawful occupation is presented.
The chair called for a motion to approve the amendment, the motion was seconded and the committee voted by voice; the record indicated unanimous approval. Committee members indicated no further debate on the amended bill during the session.
The committee made no additional changes at the hearing. The amendment replaces S718’s narrower ejectment language with the House-passed H3387 language and advances that revised text as the version approved by the subcommittee on a unanimous voice vote.
