Guam hospital seeks flexibility to outsource dietary services, projects $1.4M in savings

The Guam Legislature’s Committee on Health and Veterans Affairs heard testimony April 8 on Bill 290-38, a measure that would allow the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) to consider outsourcing dietary services for patients, visitors and staff.
GMHA’s interim CEO Jolene Ugan and Chief Financial Officer Yuka Hanova told the committee the hospital’s food-service operations are resource-intensive and that per-meal costs have risen sharply in recent years. “Food service operations are resource intensive and cost GMH about $4 million to $5 million a year for personnel, supplies and equipment repair and maintenance,” Ugan said in supporting testimony.
