Council presses Broward schools for explanation after notice to remove Plantation Middle SRO

Council members on April 15 expressed surprise and concern after administration reported a Friday afternoon notice from the Broward school district indicating Plantation Middle would lose its school resource officer next year.
Administration characterized the transmission as unexpected and said prior discussions with the district had not produced an approved list of affected schools. "Our understanding was this was still an item that was under discussion," Mr. Nunemaker told the council, noting the city expects consultation on such substantive policy changes.
Councilmembers demanded clarity about the metrics the district used—enrollment, campus size, incident rates or other criteria—and urged that any changes be applied equitably across municipalities. Several members said the SROs are mentors who have deep, long-term relationships with students and urged the city to press the district for an explanation.
Administration said it will send a letter to the superintendent asking for clarification and copies of the methodology used, and will copy all nine school-board members. The council indicated it will request a meeting with district leadership if the initial outreach does not resolve the issue.
