Following several public speakers who urged coordinated action on family homelessness, the Gainesville City Commission voted unanimously May 7 to direct Mayor Ward to send a letter to the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners and the Alachua County School Board.
Jacob Turner, vice president of the Task Force for Ending Homelessness, cited recent school‑district data showing more than 930 students leave the classroom daily without a stable place to sleep and asked for a joint review of underutilized public facilities and coordinated strategies. Lee Scott of Family Promise described that organization’s outcomes and urged an organized community response, noting Family Promise’s high housing‑stability success rate for families.
During member comment the mayor and commissioners discussed the idea of using vacated school property as a family resource center and emphasized the need for a cross‑sector convening that includes county, school district and nonprofit partners. Commissioner Chestnut moved the instruction to send the letter and to convene partners; the motion passed with a unanimous vote of commissioners present (three commissioners absent).
Why it matters: Public testimony framed family homelessness as a growing problem that is less visible than individual homelessness and may require repurposing existing public facilities and coordinated intergovernmental planning.
What’s next: The mayor’s office will prepare and send the letter; staff and the continuum of care will provide background reports to the commission as requested.
