Senate honors Birmingham superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan as outstanding superintendent of the year

The Alabama Senate on April 7 adopted a resolution commending Dr. Mark Sullivan, superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, for being named the Alabama Education Association’s 2025–26 Outstanding Superintendent.
Senator Roger Smith presented the resolution praising Sullivan’s leadership and the district’s progress since 2020. The resolution recited accomplishments credited to the district’s improvement plan: dramatic reductions in the number of schools receiving an F grade (from 15 to 1, described as a 93% reduction) and a halving of chronic absenteeism (from about 29% to under 14%). Those exact figures were cited by Dr. Sullivan in his brief remarks to the chamber.
Dr. Sullivan thanked Senator Smitherman and emphasized that the honor recognizes the work of the district’s 2,700 employees. “Success starts here,” he told senators, noting gains in literacy programs, data-driven instruction, and expanded college and career pathways. He urged continued legislative support and asked to take a picture with the chamber before departing.
The Senate read and adopted the resolution and invited Dr. Sullivan to receive the chamber’s commendation.
