Council hears Richmond Park master plan; staff describe phased build of sports complex

City staff presented the Richmond Park master plan to the Auburn City Council on April 7, describing a multi‑phase project to develop approximately 140 acres into athletic fields, parking, trails and supporting amenities.
Keith Williams, who summarized the design and site constraints, told the council the plan envisions up to 10 baseball/softball fields adaptable for different age groups, batting cages, parking sized to serve the fields (staff cited roughly 55 parking spaces per field as a planning rule of thumb), playgrounds, walking trails and use of an existing five‑acre pond. "This is an over $40 million dollar project in the moment and so there's a lot going on," Williams said while reviewing grading, drainage and the need to move significant earth on the sloped site.
Staff said the first phase will disturb about 45 acres and that the property will remain parkland; parking and restroom placement were discussed at length. Council members pressed staff on restroom counts and park capacity; staff confirmed three restroom facilities planned within the phase, sized to field usage and ADA standards, and said restroom and ADA requirements would be met during design and construction.
Why it matters: The plan addresses a documented need for more athletic facilities on Auburn's north side and will carry significant costs and grading work. Staff emphasized the project will return to council as phases and funding are refined.
