During public comment at the Dec. 15 Fanwood Borough Council meeting, resident Gary Morris raised questions about property tax assessments and downtown parking after recent property sales.
Morris asked whether 40 South is on a PILOT or otherwise receiving reduced taxation, saying it appears the property was paying about $8,000 a year in taxes and asking if an error existed in the online tax system. He also requested an official clarification about parking at the post office after new signage by a property owner indicating tow enforcement for "customers" was posted, which Morris said could create ambiguity for residents using the post office. Finally, he reported that snow had been shoveled onto a street adjacent to a fire lane near a dog run and that a fire truck could be impeded if snow accumulation continued.
Council members acknowledged the property had been sold to a new owner and said staff would follow up on the signage and towing clarification. Council members also thanked Morris for raising the fire-lane shoveling concern and indicated staff would look into it. No formal action or vote was taken during the public meeting; council closed public comment and moved to an executive session on attorney-client matters.
The council did not provide additional documentation on the tax status of 40 South during the meeting; Morris’s tax-amount figure was presented as an observational question and remains unresolved in the public record of the meeting.
