Brevard County proclaims April observances; board honors veterans and public health workers

Divine Vincent of the county's Child Abuse Prevention Task Force told commissioners the proclamation of April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month will help build partnerships across agencies, faith groups and law enforcement to support prevention and family stability. The board then read and adopted a resolution noting the role of early childhood supports and community partnerships in preventing abuse.
The board next recognized April 6–12, 2026 as Florida Public Health Week. Christine Zanka, identified in the meeting as representing the Department of Health, summarized 2025 service figures for the county health department including maternity and prenatal visits, school health services and inspections, and said the department will offer EKG screenings for students and expand clinic physicals in Melbourne and Viera. Commissioners said they appreciated the department's outreach and the board adopted the proclamation unanimously.
Commissioners also approved a resolution designating April 10 and April 2026 as Gopher Tortoise Day and Gopher Tortoise Month, citing the tortoise's role as a keystone species. Conservation partners thanked the board and noted recent county land set-asides intended to protect habitat.
Finally, the board proclaimed Brevard County a Purple Heart County. Members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart described chapter membership and recounted personal stories of service; a $8.2 million Veterans Memorial amphitheater dedication was announced for April 23.
The resolutions were presented as part of the meeting's opening agenda and drew brief public remarks and photos. None of the proclamations created any direct county programmatic obligations; they were adopted by unanimous votes.
