The Needham Design Review Board on April 6 approved two building/pylon signs and a special permit for a gas pricing sign at 1032 Highland Avenue after the applicant removed several additional signs from the earlier application.
Applicant John Carr (speaking with Jamal) told the board he wanted to keep “those two signs, the one that has the prices and the very next one on the same pylon,” and presented revised images showing fewer signs. The board discussed readability and precedent but said the reduced sign program made the building look much cleaner. Millie Prada said the cleanup was “a huge improvement,” and other members agreed.
Chair Mark Gluing moved and the board approved the two by‑right signs labeled A and H, and separately approved a special permit for the Accar Energy pricing sign. The board then voted to deny a group of other special‑permit requests (items B, C, D, J, K, L, M, N and O) that had been in the original submission. Members asked the applicant to remove remaining badge/logo signs (Toyota, Honda) from the property frontage; the applicant agreed.
Votes on the sign decisions were recorded by roll call with the board voting unanimously on the motions as presented. The applicant was instructed to proceed with permitted signs and to remove the denied sign elements from the site.
