In a contested joint vote for the South Carolina State University board seat, the clerk announced that Donald Beatty received 86 votes to Douglas Twitty’s 64 (total 150), and the assembly declared Donald Beatty duly elected. The clerk provided similar tallies or acclamations for other named seats, including elections to Coastal Carolina University, the Citadel Board of Visitors, the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees and others; some candidates withdrew and at least one seat remained vacant after withdrawals.
Representative Whitmire and commission members closed the elections and the joint assembly returned to regular House business after the results were announced.
The joint assembly’s nominations and votes were carried out under the concurrent resolution governing the screening commission’s process; several races were uncontested, while a few required full joint-ballot votes recorded by the clerk.
