The North Penn Finance Committee on April 7 approved moving forward with a recommended two-year extension of the district's transportation contract with First Student.
Ms. Hauser presented the negotiated extension as an interim measure while the district completes a transportation feasibility study. Under the extension, First Student would receive a 5% price increase each year and would not be required to purchase replacement buses or undertake capital vehicle replacements during the two-year term.
The administration said First Student will assume about 10—615 special-education van runs (previously handled by a shared-service provider) as part of the extension, a change included in the cost calculations. Ms. Hauser framed the shorter extension as a risk-management choice while the district examines longer-term options in the feasibility study.
The committee voted to approve the two-year extension and the motion passed with no recorded opposition in committee.
What this means: The extension preserves continuity of student transportation service while the district completes a study that could inform a longer-term procurement or different service model. The administration noted the contractor will continue to operate propane-fueled buses under the short-term extension.
Next steps: Staff will include the contract extension on an upcoming action agenda for full board approval and report back on the findings of the transportation feasibility study.
