Bandon SD 54 reports flat enrollment, staffing strains and mostly positive state test results

District staff told the board that enrollment remained essentially flat this year, starting at 635 students and finishing at 634. Shaa, who presented the enrollment update, said some elementary grade levels are close to thresholds that could create space and staffing issues and that the district has already hired a third teacher for an affected grade.
Shaa said the district is looking at low-impact program adjustments rather than widespread cuts, and discussed limiting sixth-grade participation in certain middle-school sports to protect seventh- and eighth-grade program development and address safety and facility constraints. “Sixth graders don’t participate in football because that’s a safety hazard,” Shaa said, noting limited field space and the burden of additional coaching.
On assessment, the district test coordinator reported strong results: most grades and subjects were above the state average, while one grade/subject lagged by about 3 percentage points. Detailed spreadsheets and a more complete review will be presented to the full board in August.
Staffing and hiring: the district seeks a part-time teacher to support multilingual students (currently seven receiving services with two monitored graduates and an anticipated increase to about 10). The district is also hiring PE teachers and special-education assistants for middle and high school levels.
Why it matters: small enrollment shifts can change staffing needs and budget planning in a small district; the testing results will help the board match goals to classroom supports when the full board reviews detailed data in August.
