Roswell seeks federal firefighter grant to modernize station alerts, replace air packs

Roswell’s fire chief told the committee on Feb. 10 that the department will seek FY2026 Assistance to Firefighters Grant funding to modernize station alerting and replace aging breathing apparatus.
Chief Pabel Tro said the department plans to apply for up to $1,410,137 to modernize its dispatch and alarm system so that only required personnel are alerted with graduated tones and lighting rather than a station‑wide buzzer. Tro said the project is part of a broader effort to reduce alarms’ impact on firefighter sleep safety.
He also said the department is pursuing replacement of self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBAs), which generally have a 15‑year life cycle; the department is approaching that timeframe for some units and wants to get ahead of replacements if the grant is awarded. The council approved a motion to apply for and accept the grant if awarded; no award has been received and specific grant line items will be set based on program rules when the grant opens.
