Fayette County highlights student achievements and Seal of Arts Excellence in planning session

Fayette County Public Schools used its May 11 planning session to highlight a year of arts achievements and explain the district’s Seal of Arts Excellence, a KDE-endorsed recognition for graduates who demonstrate advanced proficiency in visual and performing arts.
Director of Fine Arts Catherine Lowther presented enrollment and partnership data: she said 81.6% of students are rostered in fine-arts courses across the district and showcased community collaborations with organizations including the Bluegrass Youth Ballet and Keeneland. She also noted district exhibits at the Living Arts & Science Center and student awards at state and national competitions.
Kelly Mayes and staff explained the seal’s requirements (portfolio, evidence of proficiency, transcript and diploma designation) and the district reported that this year a cohort of graduates earned the seal across seven disciplines. Lafayette High senior Janeway Howard described her experience: "Through the seal of arts excellence, I was able to reflect on my musical achievements throughout my high school career," she said, and noted that competition participation led to a University of Kentucky scholarship that helped fund her college plans.
Why it matters: the presentation framed arts programs as contributing to student growth, postsecondary readiness and community partnerships that expand opportunities beyond the classroom. Board members praised the program’s scale and asked staff to continue publicizing performances and exhibition opportunities.
What’s next: staff said upcoming district-wide performances and exhibitions will be posted on the district calendar and encouraged board and community attendance.
