City parks staff told the commission that the 30 Crossing project is moving forward and that the city and state submitted a joint BUILD grant application seeking about $30 million toward an approximately $100 million overall project.
"We did apply maybe... and applied for a build grant which is approximately $30 million request," Director Leland Couch told the commission, saying the project is large and that the city expects a federal decision on June 28.
Staff also clarified a frequent point of confusion: the 30 Crossing park and the 'deck park' are separate initiatives. Couch said the 30 Crossing park refers to roughly 18 acres of ARDOT-adjacent land (divided by Second Street) that the city has master planned for downtown reuse; that park effort is different from the deck park concept, which would cover part of I-30 between Sixth and Ninth streets.
"The deck park is only a feasibility study," Couch said, noting Garver Engineering is conducting the federally funded feasibility work and that public input sessions are being scheduled. The department emphasized the difference to avoid conflation of the two projects in public communications.
Commissioners were urged to participate in public input opportunities and told the department will share dates for upcoming community sessions. No formal funding award or council vote was reported at the meeting; staff characterized the BUILD application as an important but uncertain funding opportunity.
