Board adopts Wit & Wisdom for middle grades and Teachtown for special-day classes
Summary

The Redondo Beach Unified board on May 13 approved two curriculum adoptions intended to align instruction across grade spans and better serve students with special needs.
Staff recommended adoption of Wit & Wisdom for grades 6–8 after a pilot and parent review; the district said adoption would extend the curriculum already used at the elementary level and support alignment across grade bands. The board authorized creation of a middle-school implementation committee to design a three-year rollout plan.
Separately, special-education staff recommended adopting Teachtown for preschool through adult-transition special day class (SDC) programs. The committee of special-education teachers recommended Teachtown as a standards-aligned curriculum tailored to the needs of SDC students, noting it covers academic areas plus social-skills and independent-living instruction.
Dr. Garland (presenting staff lead) summarized pilot feedback and recommended both adoptions. Board members praised teacher leadership in the pilot and emphasized the need for thoughtful professional development during rollout.
Implementation committees will include site educators and are expected to return with detailed three-year implementation plans and professional-development schedules.
