Board approves districtwide LED lighting upgrade expected to cut costs and maintenance

The Redondo Beach Unified School District board approved two bond-funded operational contracts on May 13: a five-year financial-management subscription and a districtwide LED lighting upgrade intended to reduce energy and maintenance costs.
Staff recommended a five-year contract for a key analytics financial-management platform to replace manual Excel workflows. Staff said the recommended contract would cost $72,000 per year plus a $5,000 setup fee and would help with bond and facilities tracking and state matching documentation.
The district also approved a contract to upgrade interior and exterior lighting to long-life LEDs. Facilities staff reported the interior fixtures will be direct-wired, exterior fixtures replaced with long-life LED units and a projected annual savings of more than $300,000. Staff said the district expects to be eligible for up to $170,000 in incentives through the regional SoCalREN lighting-incentives program. Board discussion noted reduced maintenance (fewer ladder work and lamp disposal) and improved light quality.
District staff present for questions included Laura Chan, executive director of fiscal services, and Fred Neal (transcribed as Fred Neil), director of facilities and construction management. The public record did not contain a roll-call vote tally; the motions carried during the meeting.
Staff said those projects will be funded from bond proceeds and will proceed to contracting and scheduling.
