District expands Hispanic Youth Leadership Clubs to every 7'2 site, plans five college tours

Will Patterson, equity and intervention specialist for Modesto City Schools, gave a report on the Hispanic Youth Leadership Clubs (HYC) on Sept. 8, saying the district now has clubs at every 7-12 site with roughly 400 student members. Patterson credited a partnership with City Ministry Network for expanding consistent programming across sites.
Carlos Gonzalez, HYC program director at City Ministry Network, described career awareness activities, leadership training, college tours and community-service projects tied to the clubs. Gonzalez shared student examples of HYC members who authored a children's book, organized events or won a speech contest.
Students and advisers from Johansson and Gregori High Schools spoke to the board about HYC's value for representation, cultural pride and leadership development. Advisers said HYC activities have generated scholarships and that the program has connected students with college tours, guest speakers and local partners.
Patterson said this year the district plans five HYC college tours (each visiting two to three campuses on Saturdays) for about 100 students, expanded leadership conferences and adviser training supported with district funds. City Ministry Network will continue to provide curriculum and coach adviser teams.
Several trustees praised the program's expansion and encouraged including technical-education institutions on college tours to reflect multiple career pathways. Trustees also commended the advisers for investing time outside the school day.
What happens next: the district will finalize college-tour schedules, provide adviser supports and track student outcomes through MTSS or other data systems as part of year-long monitoring.
