Haslet, NCTCOG and TxDOT continue work on short- and long-bridge options for Aendell/Haslet Road

City staff told the Haslet City Council on April 6 that regional partners are pursuing both short- and long-bridge options for the grade separation over the railroad at Aendell/Haslet Road.
Staff reported that a coordination meeting on April 3 with the city, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and TxDOT—facilitated by NCTCOG’s director of transportation, Michael Morris—resulted in agreement to move forward on both parallel paths: TxDOT will take responsibility for the short-bridge design while NCTCOG will perform a comprehensive scope and cost review for the broader project. NCTCOG will then present any additional funding requests to the regional transportation commission.
Staff noted NCTCOG and Haslet will pursue a competitive grant (identified in the meeting as the “Chrissy” grant) that, if awarded, could support construction of the long bridge in lieu of the short bridge. Council asked staff to make the April 3 presentation materials available online for resident review.
Council discussion emphasized the timeline differences and local-business impacts. Public comments and several emailed submissions that council read aloud at the meeting urged the city to prioritize a design that preserves access to small businesses along Schoolhouse Road and cautioned that a larger, higher-cost bridge could disrupt local commerce. In response, staff said both funding and permitting paths remain active while regional partners refine estimated costs.
Next steps: NCTCOG will finalize a cost estimate with TxDOT assistance; NCTCOG will pursue additional regional funding and the competitive grant; staff will post coordination materials on the city website and report back to council as grant/funding decisions progress.
