Dominguez read a written letter of commendation that recounted a month-long outreach: school staff and administrators were initially unable to verify a student's placement after a stepparent reported the child in the care of an aunt with no contact information. Dominguez said the SRO conducted in-person wellness checks, visited a local motel, knocked on doors and ultimately connected with someone who knew the student’s aunt.
"Officer Miranda did not hesitate," Dominguez read. "He personally arranged for her to meet him at Monta the next morning with the student," and staff assisted with enrollment paperwork and a records request from the receiving school.
Dominguez said the outcome — confirmed enrollment and records transfer — "would not have been possible without Officer Miranda's diligence, empathy, and personal commitment to ensuring this student's safety and educational continuity." The board presented Miranda with a plaque dated Nov. 18, 2025.
Board members praised the partnership between schools and the Barstow Police Department and invited officers and school staff to join a photograph with district leaders. No disciplinary or legal actions were reported; the commendation recognized Miranda’s assistance in navigating enrollment and welfare checks.
The board's recognition underscores the dual role some officers play as law-enforcement personnel and school resource officers focused on student welfare, particularly where families face unstable housing or documentation barriers.
