The Sunbury City events committee on March 17 heard presentations and status updates on a range of recurring community events, clarifying which items require further committee, parks or council approval and which are handled through staff vetting.
Ryan Winnie, vice president of the music boosters, said the Memorial Day Market will look similar to prior years with about 125 vendor booths and 8–10 food trucks; staff confirmed the market is a grandfathered road-closure event that does not need council approval. Winnie said safety and services had reviewed the plan and raised no red flags.
Tom West and Robert Holland described several disc-golf events at Kinslow, including a PDGA-sanctioned singles tournament planned for May and a proposed April 25 glow-in-the-dark doubles event (moved from April 18 to avoid a conflict). Staff said after-hours park events require parks committee approval and council sign-off when they involve park use after hours.
Staff also noted the Easter egg hunt at JRE is scheduled for March 28 and does not require events-committee approval under current policy, and the Terry Hmel Memorial Fishing Derby and an early-May fishing derby are being vetted by emergency services though they do not require committee approval. The committee asked organizers to ensure food trucks are connected with fire-department inspection and to manage trash and cleanup responsibilities after events.
Votes at a glance: The committee approved the Feb. 17 minutes by roll call; Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Crawford voted yes.
