Councilwoman Peterson read the resolution describing MS as a chronic condition affecting the central nervous system and urged residents and community leaders to participate in awareness and advocacy efforts. She then gave a personal account of the daily uncertainty MS imposes and recognized Melissa Martin, a local organizer, who was present in the chamber.
Peterson said the lived experience of MS "is waking up every day not knowing what your body's going to allow you to do" and called for deeper public understanding, patience and empathy. The council approved the resolution on a voice vote (11 aye, 4 absent).
The resolution encourages events and educational efforts in the city and will be transmitted to relevant community organizations.
