Miami Lakes committee to request $200 for Earth Day 'Back to Nature' shredding and recycling event

Carlos Andre, a resident who spoke during public comment, urged the Neighborhood Improvement Committee at its meeting to support an Earth Day "Back to Nature" shredding and recycling event on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Andre said the event would partner with the farmers market and include ShredForce to shred documents, an e‑scrap vendor to recycle batteries and laptops, and the town Solid Waste mobile unit. "Hey, look, you know, um we should probably do this around Earth Day," he said, explaining the vendors had quoted about $200 each to cover overtime and that volunteers would help residents unload items.
The committee discussed logistics including staging (entry from Bull Run near the Metawok apartments), volunteer roles, and outreach to Main Street merchants and gardening-club volunteers for tabling. Felicia Salazar, a committee member, said the event could drive foot traffic to Main Street and suggested adding the committee logo to promotional materials. Committee members noted clothing collection could be added if a third vendor is secured.
Because the NIC lacked a quorum, members did not vote; they agreed to include a $200 funding request for the event in the NIC’s report to council and to seek outside sponsorship to cover vendor fees if possible. Staff asked Mr. Andre and committee members to provide a short paragraph and any flyer copy for the packet; the report to council is slated for April 21 and the packet deadline was set for April 7.
The committee did not make a formal commitment of town funds at the meeting and said any final allocation would be decided through the council packet and subsequent council action.
