Buildings and grounds: staff reports thousands of work orders, office reshuffle and building assessments

At the March 24 meeting, buildings-and-grounds staff told the Warren County facilities committee the department has completed 7,727 work orders to date and had 17 open as of that morning (the packet listed 20), and reported 5,986 fleet-car requests handled to date.
Staff said the public defender’s office has moved downtown, leaving substantial campus space. Three public defender attorneys will remain on the campus; staff are evaluating consolidating those three into a single area to free up the remaining space for other county users such as probation and emergency services. Staff said they will report back next month with proposals for reoccupying the space.
Committee members raised concerns about deteriorating asphalt on the west side of the building. Staff said maintenance paving will proceed under existing highway and buildings-and-grounds maintenance paving budgets once procurement paperwork is complete and contracts are in place.
Staff also reported that the county will begin building assessments for aging facilities after a concrete panel detached from a 1960s-era building; the department plans to survey building conditions and return recommendations on repairs and priority projects.
Separately, staff updated the committee on a regional morgue discussion and referenced ongoing conversations with a neighboring county and a hospital about morgue services; staff said the neighboring county’s pace has been slow and that the committee will continue to monitor the issue rather than take immediate action.
Staff closed the buildings-and-grounds items by saying they will report progress and recommended space assignments at the next meeting.
