Subcommittee backs short-term extension and FY renewal for school legal services

The Legislative & Contracts Subcommittee of the Springfield Public Schools on Monday recommended a short-term extension of the district’s legal-services agreement and approved steps to put a new contract in place for the next fiscal year.
Chief Roach told the subcommittee the Norris Murray and Peloquin LLC contract ‘‘has already run out of money’’ and the district cannot pay February and March bills under the current authorization, so staff asked to extend the term through June 30 and increase the not-to-exceed amount to $200,000. The subcommittee approved the extension in a roll-call vote.
Superintendent (name and title as recorded in the meeting) said the July 1 contract will align contract amounts to the fiscal year budget. Members asked that if the FY contract approaches its cap the matter be returned for an additional vote; staff said they would come back to the committee as needed.
Separately, the subcommittee voted to forward two assistant-superintendent contracts to the full committee: one for community engagement/family empowerment and one for curriculum, instruction and professional development. Each was described as a procedural compliance step so the full committee can vote.
The subcommittee’s votes were procedural recommendations to the full committee; no final full-committee action was recorded in the subcommittee meeting. The items will appear on the full committee agenda for final approval.
